Thousands storm the Capitol as state reacts to budget votes in Legislature

Thousands of protesters rushed to the state Capitol Wednesday night as word spread of the hastily called votes that sent Gov. Scott Walker's controversial bill limiting collective bargaining rights for public workers speeding through the Legislature.

Shortly after 8 p.m., hundreds of protesters gathered outside the locked King Street entrance to the Capitol, chanting "Break down the door!" and "General strike!"

Moments later, police ceded control of the State Street doors and allowed the crowd to surge inside. The area outside the Assembly, which is scheduled to take the bill up at 11 a.m. Thursday, was jammed with protesters who chanted, "We're not leaving. Not this time."

Some said they planned to spend the night in the Capitol. Last week, a Dane County Circuit Court judge ordered dozens of protesters who had been occupying the Capitol for more than two weeks to leave.

It's not clear why police abandoned efforts to limit access to the Capitol Wednesday night,

Senate Republicans have exercised the nuclear option to ram through their bill attacking Wisconsin's working families in the dark of night," said Phil Neuenfeldt, president of the Wisconsin State AFL-CIO. "Tonight's events have demonstrated they will do or say anything to pass their extreme agenda that attacks Wisconsin's working families."

Wisconsin governor a polarizer, not a compromiser | Reuters

Jensen [friend from 1992 Wisconsin Assembly days]said the unions should not be surprised that Walker has targeted them as governor -- or that he has shown little appetite for compromise in the face of massive public protests.

"They taught him this lesson for nine years in Milwaukee County, where they made it nearly impossible for him to make reforms in a country government that was bloated and headed toward bankruptcy," Jensen said.

"They wouldn't budge an inch. So they taught him exactly what he needed to do when he became governor. Stand firm, make the changes that are necessary, and don't budge an inch."

The Senate requires a quorum to take up any measures that
spend money. But Republicans on Wednesday split from the
legislation the proposal to curtail union rights, which
spends no money,
and a special conference committee of state
lawmakers approved the bill a short time later.

Americans for Prosperity Road Show is Classic Astroturf | Center for Media and Democracy

the Koch-backed group, Americans for Prosperity (AFP), whose four-day, ten-city bus PR event across Wisconsin to support controversial Governor Scott Walker started in Kenosha March 3 and concluded in Madison on March 7 -- but not at the Capitol, where the bus would have been surrounded by the tens of thousands of people gathered to oppose Walker's union-crushing "budget repair" bill. Instead, AFP ended its tour at the Alliant Energy Center, where protesters against Walker's radical proposals who were outside in the cold easily outnumber the pro-Walker crowd in inside the rented space.

AFP is also in Wisconsin with a $400,000 and counting TV ad-buy themed "Who Decides Wisconsin's Future?" in support of Governor Walker. The ad buy has been a subject of two ethics complaints filed with the state's Government Accountability Board.

possesses many characteristics indicative of a front group. It avoids mentioning its main sources of funding, engages in actions that benefit a third party, like a company, industry or political candidate. Its members are not its primary financial supporters, though it touts its membership while not revealing its biggest funders. And, last but not least, AFP can afford to send a custom-painted luxury

If you are not familiar with them, they have been secretly funding various tea party efforts and have at least one Governor in their pocket.

General Strike Called in Wisconsin - Salem-News.Com

It is against Wisconsin law for public workers to strike. It is against the federal Taft-Hartley Act to have a sympathy strike by private sector unions.   So don’t expect to see labor officials spelling out the start of a general strike.  It may be more of a twitter event which just happens.

Wisconsin governor Scott Walker appears to be unconcerned about the looming general strike and continues to push his program forward vigorously.

Unions and other labor advocates have taken a soft position on a general strike due to no-strike provisions in many of today’s labor contracts.   As early as February 21, the Wisconsin South Central Federation of Labor backed, but did not actually call a strike stating "The SCFL endorses a general strike, possibly for the day Walker signs his 'budget repair bill."

Madison Wisconsin Capital Times reports, “both Mayor Dave Cieslewicz and past mayor and current candidate Paul Soglin talked about a general strike at a candidate forum Feb. 23”

A general strike in Wisconsin would be historic.  The last general strikes in the US occurred in Seattle in 1919 and San Franciso and Minneapolis in 1934

The possibility of a strike against consumption would also make a General Strike harder for the governor to resist.

Say it is just my guess—but a general strike will be threatened if Governor Walker thinks he “won”when the Dem Senators return to Madison.

A number of labor organizations have proposed a general strike on the day that the reform bill passes the Wisconsin legislature, but there have been more recent rumblings on twitter and facebook proposing an earlier date and making Governor Walker’s resignation the end date of a strike with comments like, “General Strike! Until Walker out! Stay united. Say goodbye to the many with the bully attitude.”
